In this work, we focus on human influence from the point of view of the decline of agri-managed areas. Specifically, we will focus on the area of Prague, which is located in the very heart of Central Europe. The city of Prague, which is very often visited by tourists around the world, has undergone great socio-economic development over the last two centuries, which is also related to the form and distribution of this agglomeration. More than a million living people work here every day and it is estimated that half a million people travel daily to Prague. This city is therefore under great pressure in terms of transport, service, data and supply infrastructure. This has led to a number of changes and the general expansion of this city into a wide area.

Project description

The majority of natural hazards driven by climate change belong to the hydro-meteorological grouping including for example floods and drought. Risk, frequency and intensity of these hazards in an area are influenced by changes in climatic variables.

Overall, hydro-meteorological hazards are considered a greater threat than geophysical hazards such as earthquakes or landslides, given the extensive areas affected. The EEA (2012) identifies river flooding together with wind related storms as the most important natural hazards in the EU in terms of economic loss. The spatial distribution of high and very high flood hazard risk did not change significantly from 2002 to 2012. However, flood occurrence is projected to increase even further with climate change. The main reason for high flood occurrence is the general increase in winter precipitation, apparent in almost all regions of Europe except in the Mediterranean.

The students assess the regional impact of floodings in Switzerland by analysing satellite images and evaluate respective consequences for people and their environment.

Project description

Since 1891 lime and clay as well as the production of cement have been closely related to the history of the municipalities of Auenstein, Veltheim and Möriken-Wildegg. The first two pit stones «Jakobsberg» and «Un-teregg» were situated in Auenstein and Veltheim. (http://www.zukunft-steinbruch.ch/, 27.7.2017)

However, the natural potential of the pit stones is going to be exhausted soon. The Jura Cement company intends to expand the mining area at the expense of recreational, interactive space and a quiet settlement area. This led to an intense debate and conflict of interests between local politicians, citizens and the Jura Cement company representatives. This debate forms a complex basis for the students to analyse, evaluate and judge the economic, ecological and social impacts of an eventual mining expansion in the corresponding areas.
